What of part NO is it that you don't understand? Kidding aside, it all depended on the type of overseers or elders you had. Some where more rigid than others. I've known and met all types, especially the very lenient ones. These brothers were not pushy not dictatorial, it was a pleasure to be amongest them, mind you, they were in the minority.

as it's a new year, and most of us made resolutions, i'd like to know what about yourself you would truly change if you could?
if you had one wish and it meant you could magically alter something of yourself, what would it be?.
what quality about yourself do you wish would go away?
I've often used the word, content , and why not? I'm always learning to live with myself. To make life comfortable, you need to come to terms with yourself as best as possible. What does it take? Hmmmmm. Time, patience and an inner knowledge of thyself are great starters. We all progress accordingly.
Here are two quotes you may want to consider. "Persistence is the twin sister of excellence. One is a matter of quality, the other, a matter of time."
"To thy ownself be true..." Remember, the second greatest commandment besides loving your neighbor is "...love thyself," so, when you forgive others, don't forget yourself.

it always bothered me that i couldn't even stay awake to thank my god.
i found out later many did the same.
Of course I did! I eventually figured out why my prayers were half answered!

she always calls me at work.
i haven't heard from her in almost 3 months.
(she never calls anywhere near the holidays.
Why not surprise HER the next time she calls you at work. Say, "hi mom, you know, I was just thinking about you, by the way, the kids are fine and happy. You have to excuse me because I have an urgent errand to attend to. Thanks for calling." ( I'm sure you can create your own scenario.)

something recently occurred to me that many people, whether former jws or others who faced hardships in life, often look for meaning to life ... specifically a special meaning to their own lives ... i have done that at times, before i became a jw, while a jw, and more so since i left the religion.. i was having a conversation recently with my oldest son who is now 29 years old.
we discussed the meaning to life and how he sees himself now - in his ex-jw years - given that he was raised a jw.
he made the following comment i thought some here may find insightful.

I've often said, I'm content. Only you have the will and power to make things happen for yourself. The question is, are you willing to reach out and make things happen? Playing professional sports gives you a different outlook in life and it has for me. I cannot describe it for you to understand, you have to experience it.

Does it really make a difference? I guess it does, because, experience has shown that some people have difficulty understanding the simple word, NO! What part of NO is it that they don't understand?
Now, which translation do you recommend for some people to understand this word? ( salt required)
